Each month, starting in September 2009, we will be screening a very interesting documentary movie that will be followed by a panel discussion. In each case, the panel will consist of relevant experts, hopefully the film’s director and others with intimate knowledge and experience of the subject. We ask for a voluntary donation at the door to cover expenses associated with each screening event.

Chief Rabbi of Poland Speaks at Habonim
The event may be listened to on line at:

Rabbi Michael Schudrich, the Chief Rabbi of Poland, spoke at Habonim on Monday, May 11th, 2009 to a crowd that rivaled the attendance at our High Holiday services. The event was sponsored by the Polish Jewish Heritage Foundation of Canada (PJHFC) and chaired by Eli Rubenstein, Habonim’s Religious Leader. Rabbi Schudrich’s engaging and thoughtful answers to some very tough and emotional questions about anti-Poland and Semitism were well received. (The evening’s program also included eloquent first hand reports by two participants in this year’s March of the Living, Habonim members Eve Hurowitz and Joel Kadish.)

Creative Writing Contest for the Homeless Held at Habonim; Tony Blair and Belinda Stronach Among the Judges.
Pictures from the event may be viewed at: http://web.me.com/uiaeli/Site_7/Veahavta_Writing_Contest.html

On Sunday, June 7th, Congregation Habonim hosted Ve’ahavta’s 8th Annual Creative Writing Contest. The evening, titled “Voices from the Street”, featured the poignant and challenging stories of life on the streets and in shelters from members of Toronto’s homeless community. This year’s judges included Rt. Hon Tony Blair, Belinda Stronich, Steve Paikin, and the 2005 contest winner Theresa Schrader. The first prize winner, among many worthy submissions, was 17 year old Katelyn Cooke.

The hallmarks of the Habonim experience are:
A truly warm, welcoming and accepting congregation
in modest and unassuming surroundings,
for liberal Jews with a strong social justice and humanitarian agenda and
a deep commitment to the memory of the Holocaust and to the existence of Israel
where the rituals and traditions of Judaism are celebrated in a flexible, creative and spiritually enlightened fashion.
