After leaving the corporate world to focus on family and philanthropy, she joined the board and executive of Robbins Hebrew Academy and later chaired the Beth Tzedec–USDS Building Committee. Following her climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2011, she founded Grads Go Global, a charity uniting Toronto’s high school graduates to support Amani Children’s Home in Tanzania—raising over $200,000 for the cause. Cheryl continues to serve on the board of Friends of Amani Canada.
She and her husband Mark have been long-time Habonim members, celebrating their own and their sons’ Bar Mitzvahs here. Cheryl joined the Habonim Board in 2017 and the executive in 2019, leading many of the congregation’s new programming initiatives.
Joanie was a long-time Habonim board member who brought extensive volunteer and Jewish communal experience, including with the Israel Cancer Research Fund, Ride to Conquer Cancer, and the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning. She also chaired numerous school committees when her children were young.
Her leadership was instrumental in the fruition and success of the new Habonim building. Joanie and her husband Steven have two adult children who attended the Habonim Jewish Heritage School and celebrated their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs with Eli.
Ted Rechtshaffen has been a member of Habonim since 1988, joining the Board as Treasurer in 2007. He believes Habonim provides an ideal home for those seeking an open, meaningful, accepting, and down-to-earth community—where the music is very good too!
Outside Habonim, Ted is President and CEO of TriDelta Financial and TriDelta Investment Counsel. He also writes a personal finance column for the National Post. Ted’s wife Cathy served as Registrar of the Habonim Jewish Heritage School, and together they have three children: Hannah, Meyer, and Owen.
