Avrum's Shiur
Shalom! Welcome to my Journey Shiur (Class). Please join me this evening, at 7 pm on Zoom. See the link below. In this shiur, everyone has a voice. There is no muting. Your thoughts and ideas about life, Judaism and Torah are welcomed.
BE HOLY: The shiur is in memory of Rabbi Benjamin Hecht Z"L, who was a very holy man. His first yahrzeit is upon us. Rabbi Hecht was a beautiful Jew, a magnificent person, an educator who brought intellectual freedom to many of our thought processes. He did this through his championing of an e'lu ve'alu approach to Torah learning and life -- the idea that this is right, and that is right....all within a Torah context.
Rabbi Hecht's understanding of life was that it was incumbent upon all of us to think, to work through ideas, to hear others and their reasonable points of view. His framework for Torah learning was anathema to today's embrace of woke thought - that either you think like me, or I will castigate you, even shame you.
This frustrated Rabbi Hecht, in particular near the end of his life, but he never stopped encouraging Jews to exercise their intellect so that they appreciated the plethora of opinions in all issues, and the multi-layered reality of life.
Rest in Peace, Rabbi Benjamin Hect. Thank you for what you brought me, and many others, a greater ability to see outside of ourselves and to hear what others have to say....to really try hearing. Please see Rabbi Hecht's Torah thoughts at www.nishma.org . His website and weekly email are managed by his very loving and diligent children. Well done to them.
The Journey Shiur this evening is also in memory of Rabbi Hecht's wife, Naomi Hecht Z"L. She was his partner in life and in thought, always and forever. We remember Marci Tenenbaum Z"L, a fine human being who lived to be kind.
And we dedicate tonight's Torah learning to the hostages, the IDF, the soldiers fighting on behalf of every Jew in the world, and the brave and courageous Jews in the frontlines of the Jewish people, on every campus and every neighbourhood, everywhere. The battle is an arduous one, but we are equipped to fight it with God's help.
AM YISRAEL CHAI. The Nation of Israel Lives. Embrace your Jewishness like never before. Like this parsha (portion of the Torah) says, "Be Holy...." . That means go beyond the letter of the law, and sacrifice to be brave, kind, generous, loving and a Jewish warrior. Be Holy.
AM YISRAEL CHAI,
With Love,
Avraham Yitzchak Rosensweig
